If your gross sales reach $30,000.00 per year, you are required to register for GST.

Otherwise, it is optional. In some cases it is beneficial to register for the GST right at the start of your business. For example, if you are buying equipment, you will only be eligible to get your GST rebate on the GST you pay for the equipment if you are already registered for the GST.
